Police object to beach photos of India's president

By AP
PANAJI - Police have questioned three photographers whose images showed India's ceremonial president relaxing on a Goa beach in a sari.

Several newspapers published photos of 76-year-old conservative Pratibha Patil wearing a yellow, full-length traditional dress and head covering. A Western couple wearing swimsuits were among fellow tourists at Benaulim beach Tuesday in the resort state on India's west coast.

Umesh Gaonkar, a deputy superintendent of police, said Patil's security warned media not to take photos because her visit is private. The three were asked how far they were from the president before being released.

Rajtilak Naik, president of the Photo Journalists Association of Goa, said the beach was a public place and photographers had "every right to take photos there."
